Most visited site in Val de Loire
The Château d'Azay-le-Rideau embodies the quintessence of the first French Renaissance. Built between 1518 and 1524, it rests on stilts in the Indre river, offering rare visual symmetry. Listed as a Historic Monument in 1914, it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to admire its harmonious architecture and French gardens restored by the de Biencourt family. This jewel of the Val de Loire is an absolute must-see.
History of Azay-le-Rideau Castle
Built for Gilles Berthelot, Treasurer of France under Francis I, this estate was initiated after the acquisition of the land in 1512. Construction proper began in 1518, replacing an old feudal fortress destroyed during the civil war. The architect, who remained anonymous, designed an innovative structure placed directly on the island formed by the Indre river, marking a break with the traditional fortified medieval castles of the region. This technical boldness remains unique.
Philippe Lesbahy, wife of Gilles Berthelot, played a crucial role in supervising the works during her husband's frequent absences. She sometimes entrusted supervision to Abbot Guillaume Artault. However, Berthelot's financial malfeasance led to his condemnation in 1527 and his flight to Metz. King Francis I then confiscated the unfinished castle in June 1528, abruptly ending the original project of its initial patrons and changing the course of its history.
The castle changed hands several times before being given by the king to Antoine Raffin in 1535. The latter attempted to modify the architecture by closing the courtyard, but the idea was abandoned, preserving the distinctive L-shape. After centuries of private ownership and major restorations in the 19th century, the State repurchased the monument in 1905 to save it from sale, thus ensuring its public conservation and official listing a few years later, guaranteeing its longevity against past degradation.
What to see at Azay-le-Rideau Castle
The interior of the castle reveals rich neo-Renaissance decoration, notably thanks to the 19th-century restorations. The Biencourt salon is particularly remarkable with its painted decorations evoking aristocratic life of the era. Visitors can also admire the central grand staircase, a key element of Renaissance interior architecture, whose symmetrical double flight perfectly illustrates the aesthetics of the period and guides circulation through noble spaces, symbolizing royal power.
Outside, the English-style park offers a romantic walk surrounding the castle and its moats, which are still filled with water. Perspectives are carefully crafted to maximize reflections of the building on the Indre, especially in the morning when the light is soft. This landscape staging complements the architectural experience by inviting peaceful contemplation, far from urban bustle, while allowing discovery of local biodiversity present on the banks and islets, creating an idyllic setting conducive to photography.
Temporary exhibitions regularly enrich the cultural offer of the site, such as the one dedicated to Karen Knorr scheduled for 2026. These events allow heritage history to intersect with contemporary creations, revitalizing the perception of the place. Historical animations and immersive shows, such as 'La Conjuration d'Azay', add a lively and theatrical dimension to the visit, making history accessible and emotional for a broad audience, from families to art enthusiasts, during highly frequented summer periods.
Site Architecture and Accessibility
The architecture of Azay-le-Rideau is distinguished by its insular position and foundation on stilts, a bold technique for the time. This elevation protects the building from floods of the Indre while creating this iconic mirror effect. The facade presents strict geometric regularity, typical of the first Touraine Renaissance, where Italian influences adapt to local materials. The open L-shape facing the river remains a unique feature, rejecting defensive enclosure in favor of visual openness onto the landscape.
The site is labeled Tourisme & Handicap, guaranteeing accessibility adapted for people with reduced mobility. Specific arrangements allow visiting the lower parts and the park without major obstacles. This inclusive approach aims to make this exceptional heritage accessible to all audiences, respecting modern standards while preserving the historical integrity of the monument. Disabled visitors benefit from secure routes and dedicated services for a comfortable and autonomous experience on the listed estate.
Located in Indre-et-Loire, the castle is easily accessible from Tours, about 30 minutes by car. It fits into a dense tourist itinerary linking Chenonceau, Chinon, and Loches. The proximity of the medieval village of Azay-le-Rideau allows extending the visit with a discovery of the historic center, with its cobblestone streets and church. This combination of monumental heritage and rural charm makes the destination a major attraction for cultural tourism in Touraine.

Little-known anecdotes
On stilts in the Indre
Built partly on stilts in the bed of the Indre right where the old fortress stood, the castle was built from 1518 to 1524. This bold technique creates unique reflections, offering a visual spectacle that makes it one of the highlights of the Loire Valley castles.
Led by a woman
During Gilles Berthelot's frequent absences, his wife Philippe Lesbahy actively supervised the works starting in 1518. She sometimes entrusted supervision to Abbot Guillaume Artault, marking a rare female involvement in French Renaissance architecture.
Unique L-shape
The initial idea of completely closing the courtyard was abandoned under Antoine Raffin, preserving this distinctive L-shaped silhouette. This architectural decision gives the castle its open character, prioritizing views of the water over traditional quadrilateral defense.
Confiscated by Francis I
The castle was seized by the king while still unfinished, following the financial malfeasance of Berthelot in 1528. This confiscation marks a dramatic turning point, preventing the original owners from seeing their project completed according to their initial wishes.
Purchase by the State
Saved from a potential private sale, the estate became a national monument thanks to purchase by the State in 1905. This decisive intervention allowed this heritage jewel to be preserved for the public, avoiding its disappearance or transformation into a closed property.
Official MH Listing
Official recognition of its historical and artistic importance with listing as a Historic Monument on April 18, 1914. This date symbolizes France's commitment to protecting its Renaissance heritage against modern threats and the degradation of time.
